A day for noticing the plants that grow where nobody planted them, from dandelions in sidewalk cracks to clover in the lawn.

Weed Appreciation Day falls on Sunday, March 28, 2027. That is 152 days away.
A weed is simply a plant growing somewhere a person did not intend. The label says more about our plans than about the plant. Dandelions, clover, plantain and chicory are all called weeds in one yard and wildflowers in the next.
Many of these plants are tough in ways that are easy to admire. Dandelions send down a long taproot and scatter seeds on little parachutes that ride the wind. Clover adds nitrogen to the soil with help from bacteria in its roots. Plenty of common weeds flower early, and bees and other insects visit them when little else is blooming.
Appreciating weeds mostly means looking at them properly for once. A crack in a parking lot can hold a whole small garden: a rosette of plantain, a spray of purslane, a stalk of something nobody can name. Some people bring a field guide or a plant identification app and try to put names to what they find. Others leave one patch of lawn unmowed to see what turns up, or press a few flowers in a heavy book.
Identifying a weed before touching it is sensible, since a few common ones, like poison ivy, cause rashes. Most are harmless to look at and photograph.
The chicory by the roadside, with its pale blue flowers, tends to open in the morning and close by afternoon, so the best time to see it is early.
