A little reason to celebrate

National Weed Your Garden Day

Nature · Hobby · June 13

A day for pulling weeds, tending garden beds and getting a closer look at what is actually growing in the yard.

National Weed Your Garden Day

National Weed Your Garden Day falls on Sunday, June 13, 2027. That is 229 days away.

Weeding is the quiet work of gardening: kneeling in the dirt and removing the plants you did not invite so the ones you did can have the water, light and room they need.

Most weeds are simply fast, tough plants that are good at moving in. Dandelions send down a long taproot. Crabgrass spreads low and wide. Many weeds set seed quickly, which is why one missed plant can turn into a patch the next season. Pulling them before they flower saves a lot of work later.

The job goes easier when the soil is damp, so the morning after a rain is a fine time to start. Grip a weed close to the base and pull slowly, and more of the root tends to come with it. A hand trowel or a weeding fork helps with stubborn ones. Some gardeners find the whole thing oddly calming, a task with a clear beginning, a visible result and a pile at the end to prove it.

Weeding is also a way of paying attention. You notice which seedlings are coming up, where the soil stays wet, and which corner the rabbits have been visiting. Not everything green needs to go, either. Clover and violets have their fans, and part of the work is deciding what counts as a weed in your own yard.

Pulled weeds that have not gone to seed can often go straight onto the compost pile, where they break down like any other green material.
