A day for wine, the drink made from fermented grapes, and for the small rituals of pouring, tasting and sharing a glass with company.

National Wine Day falls on Tuesday, May 25, 2027. That is 210 days away.
Wine starts as grapes. Crushed and left to ferment, their sugars turn into alcohol, and the juice becomes something people have been pouring for a very long time.
Red wine gets its color from grape skins left in contact with the juice. White wine is usually made with the skins removed early, and rosé sits somewhere between, with only brief skin contact. Sparkling wine holds on to its bubbles because carbon dioxide is trapped during fermentation. Beyond those basics, the grape variety, the soil and the weather all leave their mark, which is why two bottles of the same kind can taste surprisingly different.
Most people mark the day simply, with a glass at dinner or a bottle opened among friends. Some use it to try a grape they have never heard of, or to compare two wines side by side and see whether they can tell them apart. Tasting notes can get poetic (leather, violets, wet stone), and it is fine to say a wine just tastes nice.
The glass matters a little. A wide bowl lets the aroma gather, and holding a glass by the stem keeps a chilled white from warming in your hand.
For anyone who skips alcohol, grape juice and the vineyard itself are their own subjects, and the rows of vines look much the same either way.
