A day for making a second copy of the photos, files and messages you would hate to lose, and checking that the copy actually works.

World Backup Day falls on Wednesday, March 31, 2027. That is 155 days away.
A backup is a second copy of something digital, kept somewhere other than the original. Photos, school papers, tax files, a half-written novel. World Backup Day is a reminder to make that copy, and it is marked in the United States as well as elsewhere.
The idea is simple. Phones get dropped, laptops get coffee spilled on them, and hard drives eventually wear out. A file that lives in only one place is one accident away from gone. A file that lives in two or three places tends to survive.
Many people follow a rough rule of keeping three copies, on two kinds of storage, with one copy kept away from home. That might mean the original on a laptop, a copy on an external drive, and another in a cloud storage service. It sounds like a lot until the day it is needed.
Marking the day is quiet work. People plug in a drive they forgot they owned, turn on automatic backups for their phone, or finally sort the family photos scattered across old devices. Some help a parent or neighbor do the same, which often takes longer than expected and involves at least one forgotten password.
The step people skip most is testing. A backup only counts if it can be opened, so it helps to pick one file from the copy and try to restore it. If it opens, the copy is real.
