A day about emoji, the small pictures people tuck into texts and posts to add tone, warmth and the occasional wink to plain words.

World Emoji Day falls on Saturday, July 17, 2027. That is 263 days away.
Emoji are the little pictures that sit inside text: faces, food, weather, animals, flags, hand gestures and a surprising number of vegetables. They are characters, like letters, which is why a heart sent from one phone usually arrives as a heart on another, even if it looks a bit different.
The day is marked around the world, and people in the United States take part too, mostly in the places where emoji already live. Group chats fill up with favorites. Friends try telling whole stories in pictures and see who can decode them. Some people finally look up what that one ambiguous symbol is supposed to mean.
Part of the appeal is how much a single picture can carry. A plain "okay" reads one way, and the same word with a smiling face reads another. Emoji do the job that tone of voice and a raised eyebrow do in person, which is a lot to ask of something the size of a fingernail.
They also change over time. New ones are added in batches, and the look of each one depends on the company that draws it, so the same face can seem cheerful on one screen and faintly worried on another.
The word itself comes from Japanese, where it roughly combines "picture" and "character." It only sounds like "emotion" by coincidence.
