Fun ยท June 6
A day for the yo-yo, the spinning toy on a string, and for the simple pleasure of making it come back up to your hand.

National Yo-Yo Day falls on Sunday, June 6, 2027. That is 222 days away.
A yo-yo is two discs joined by an axle, with a string looped around the middle. Drop it, and it spins its way down the string. Give a small tug at the right moment, and it climbs back to your hand.
That is the whole idea, and it turns out to hold a lot. Beginners work on the basic throw and return. Before long, they want the yo-yo to stay spinning at the bottom of the string, a move called the sleeper. From there come tricks with names like walk the dog and around the world, where the toy rolls along the floor or swings in a wide circle overhead.
Part of the appeal is how little a yo-yo asks. It fits in a pocket, needs no batteries, and makes a quiet whirring sound when it spins well. Some people keep one on a desk and pick it up without thinking, the way others click a pen.
Marking the day is mostly a matter of finding a yo-yo and letting it go. Old ones turn up in junk drawers and toy boxes, often with a tangled string that just needs replacing. Kids and grown-ups tend to pick up the same first trick at about the same speed, which makes it an easy thing to try together.
The string matters more than it looks. It should reach roughly from the floor to your belly button, and a fresh one often makes a stubborn yo-yo behave.
