A little reason to celebrate

National Zoo Lovers Day

Animal ยท April 8

A day for people who love zoos, from the first look at a sleeping lion to the keeper talks and the long walk back to the gate.

National Zoo Lovers Day

National Zoo Lovers Day falls on Thursday, April 8, 2027. That is 163 days away.

Zoos are places where people can see animals from far away up close: giraffes reaching for leaves, otters rolling in cold water, tortoises moving at their own careful pace. Zoo Lovers Day is for the people who keep coming back to watch.

A good zoo visit has its own rhythm. Some animals are busy in the morning and nap through the afternoon, so the big cats you hoped to see may be a heap of fur in the shade. Patience usually pays. Stand at one exhibit a little longer than feels normal and the animal often does something, even if it is only a yawn.

Many zoos post schedules for keeper talks and feeding times. Those are often the best moments of the day, when you learn why a flamingo stands on one leg or how an elephant uses its trunk to drink. Keepers tend to know each animal by name and by personality.

Zoo lovers also enjoy the quieter parts: the reptile house on a hot day, the bird aviary where something small and bright lands just out of reach, the map that never quite matches the paths. Plenty of people mark the day without visiting at all, by watching a zoo's animal cameras or reading about a species they first met behind glass as a child.

Elephants, for the record, pick up water in their trunks and then spray it into their mouths rather than sipping through them like straws.
