A day for taking photos of the pets you live with, from sleepy cats to muddy dogs, and sharing the pictures that show who they really are.

All American Pet Photo Day falls on Sunday, July 11, 2027. That is 257 days away.
Pet photos are among the most common pictures people take. The phone camera roll of a pet owner tends to fill up with the same animal in a hundred slightly different naps.
The subject is the photographing itself. A good pet photo is less about a perfect pose and more about catching character: the dog who waits by the door, the cat who claims every open box, the rabbit mid hop. Animals rarely hold still on request, so patience does most of the work.
A few plain habits help. Getting down to the animal's eye level makes a picture feel more personal than shooting from above. Soft daylight from a window flatters fur better than a harsh overhead lamp, and turning off the flash keeps eyes from glowing and spares the animal a startling burst of light. A treat or a squeaky toy held just above the lens can earn a few seconds of attention.
People mark the day by taking new photos, digging out old ones, and sharing them with friends or family. Some print a favorite and frame it. Others make a small album of a pet's life so far, which can be a lovely thing to look back on later.
The best shot often comes right after you lower the camera, when the animal finally relaxes and yawns.
