A day for the swimming pool: the backyard rectangle, the public pool and the neighborhood swim club, and the simple pleasure of getting in the water.

National Swimming Pool Day falls on Sunday, July 11, 2027. That is 257 days away.
A swimming pool is a basin of water built for swimming, wading and floating, kept clean with filters and treatments like chlorine. Some are backyard shapes, some are long public lanes, and some are a hotel's patch of blue next to the parking lot.
The pool has its own sensory world. There is the sharp smell near the gate, the slap of sandals on wet concrete, the shock of the first step in, and the way sound goes soft once your ears are under. Lifeguards sit high on their chairs, someone is always testing the deep end, and a kid somewhere is asking for one more cannonball.
Most people mark the day by simply going. A municipal pool is often the cheapest option, and many towns post open swim hours for families. Others swim laps, float on a noodle, or sit on the edge with their feet in and call that participation, which it is.
Pools come in shallow and deep sections for a reason, and the painted depth markers along the edge tell you which is which. Reading them before you jump is an old pool habit that still holds up.
At the end of a long afternoon in the water, the towel left on a warm chair is often the best part of the walk back.
