A day for animal crackers, the small, lightly sweet cookies shaped like lions, camels, elephants and other creatures.

National Animal Crackers Day falls on Sunday, April 18, 2027. That is 173 days away.
Animal crackers are small, lightly sweet cookies pressed into the shapes of animals. A handful might hold a lion, a camel, a bear and an elephant, each one stamped with just enough detail to tell them apart if you squint.
The dough is simple: flour, sugar, fat and a little leavening, sometimes with a hint of vanilla. That plainness is the point. They are crisp rather than crumbly and not very sweet, which is why they turn up in lunchboxes, diaper bags and office desk drawers in roughly equal measure. Some versions come frosted in pink and white with sprinkles, a sweeter cousin of the plain kind.
Most people have a method. Some eat the legs first, then the head. Some sort the box by species before eating any of them. Others hunt for the rarest shape and save it for last, as though it were the final piece of a puzzle.
Marking the day takes very little. Open a box, pour some into a bowl and see who can name every animal. They pair well with a glass of milk or a cup of tea, and they are easy to dunk without falling apart too quickly.
The classic box, printed like a circus wagon with a string handle, was built to be carried. Plenty of adults still remember hooking one over a finger and walking around with it.
