A little reason to celebrate

National Lineman Appreciation Day

Commemorative · April 18

A day of thanks for the line workers who build, maintain and repair the power lines that keep electricity flowing to homes and businesses.

National Lineman Appreciation Day

National Lineman Appreciation Day falls on Sunday, April 18, 2027. That is 173 days away.

Line workers are the people who build and repair the overhead and underground cables that carry electricity. When a storm knocks out power, they are often the ones out in the wind and rain, working until the lights come back on.

The job is physical and technical at once. Line workers climb utility poles or ride in bucket trucks, wearing insulated gloves and harnesses. They string new wire, replace transformers, clear damaged equipment and trace faults along miles of line. Much of the work happens high off the ground, near energized equipment, in whatever weather the day brings.

The title is traditionally "lineman," though plenty of women do the work too, and many crews now say "line worker." The trade is usually learned through long apprenticeships, with years of training before someone works on their own.

Appreciation tends to be simple. People thank crews they see working in the neighborhood, and utilities and co‑ops often share photos and stories from the field. Some communities drop off snacks or coffee at local yards, especially after a long stretch of storm repairs.

Next time a bucket truck is parked under a pole on your street, look up. Someone up there is making sure the refrigerator keeps humming.
