A little reason to celebrate

April Showers Day

Nature · Seasonal · April 22

April Showers Day looks at spring rain: the soft, frequent showers of the season, what they do for gardens, and how to enjoy a wet afternoon.

April Showers Day

April Showers Day falls on Thursday, April 22, 2027. That is 177 days away.

Spring rain arrives in short bursts. A gray cloud slides over, the sidewalk darkens in spots, and ten minutes later the sun is back on wet leaves. April Showers Day is about that kind of weather, the light, frequent rain that comes with the turn of the season.

These showers happen because spring air is unsettled. Warm air moves in while cooler air lingers, and the mix builds quick clouds that drop rain and move on. The ground, softened after winter, soaks much of it up. Seeds sprout, grass greens, and earthworms come to the surface, which is why a morning walk after rain can mean stepping carefully.

There is also the smell. Rain on dry soil and pavement releases a scent people often describe as clean or earthy, and it has a name: petrichor. Many people can tell a shower is close before the first drop lands.

Marking the day is simple. Some people sit by an open window and listen. Others put on boots and go looking for puddles, or set out a jar to see how much rain falls. Gardeners tend to be the happiest, since every shower is watering they do not have to do. Children, given a raincoat and a puddle, usually need no instructions at all.

After the rain stops, look low along the edges of paths and lawns. That is where the worms, the beaded spiderwebs and the brightest new green tend to show up first.
