A little reason to celebrate

Girl Scout Leader Day

Commemorative ยท April 22

A day for thanking the volunteer adults who lead Girl Scout troops, plan meetings and guide girls through badges, trips and projects.

Girl Scout Leader Day

Girl Scout Leader Day falls on Thursday, April 22, 2027. That is 177 days away.

Somewhere tonight, an adult is counting craft sticks at a kitchen table, checking a permission slip list and wondering where the spare first aid kit went. That person is probably a Girl Scout troop leader, and this is the day set aside to thank them.

Troop leaders are adults who guide a group of girls through the Girl Scout program. Most are volunteers. They plan meetings, help girls work toward badges, organize outings and service projects, and keep track of a surprising amount of paperwork. Many leaders are parents who said yes once and then kept saying yes for years.

The job is less about being in charge and more about making room. A good leader lets girls choose a project, run the meeting or figure out a problem themselves, then stands nearby in case the tent poles win. Leaders often work in pairs or small teams, with co-leaders and helpers sharing the load.

The day is usually marked in simple ways. Troops make cards, girls say a few words at a meeting, and families send a note or a small homemade gift. Former scouts sometimes reach out to a leader they had long ago, which can mean a great deal to someone who wondered if any of it stuck.

If you know a leader, a specific memory tends to land better than general praise. The campfire song, the rainy hike, the time the craft glue got everywhere.
