A day for the patch of grass, dirt or patio behind the house, and the slow, ordinary pleasures of spending time out there.

National Backyard Day falls on Friday, March 19, 2027. That is 143 days away.
A backyard is the outdoor space behind a home, and it comes in every size. Some are wide lawns with a swing set. Some are a square of concrete with two chairs and a potted tomato. The day is a nudge to go out the back door and use whatever is there.
Most of what happens in a backyard is unremarkable, which is part of the appeal. Kids invent games with rules that change every ten minutes. Adults water plants, light a grill, or sit and watch the light move across the fence. Dinner tastes a little different eaten outside, even when it is the same dinner.
The yard is also busier than it looks. Look closely and there are ants running supply lines along the edge of the patio, birds checking the grass for insects, and bees working through any flowers that are open. Turn over a flat stone and you may find pill bugs, which roll into a ball when disturbed.
Families tend to mark the day by simply staying out longer than usual. A blanket on the grass, a board game on the picnic table, or an evening of looking for the first stars all count. If there is no yard at home, a balcony, stoop or shared courtyard works the same way.
As it gets dark, the yard changes hands. Moths gather near porch lights, crickets start up in the grass, and in many places fireflies begin blinking low over the lawn.
