A day for poultry, the birds people raise for eggs and meat, from chickens and turkeys to ducks and geese, and the many dishes made from them.

National Poultry Day falls on Friday, March 19, 2027. That is 143 days away.
Poultry is the name for birds kept on farms for their eggs, their meat or both. Chickens are the familiar ones, but the word also covers turkeys, ducks, geese and quail.
Each bird has its own habits. Chickens scratch at the ground for seeds and insects and settle into a pecking order within a flock. Ducks and geese are waterfowl, with webbed feet and feathers that shed water. Turkeys are large, curious birds, and the males fan their tail feathers wide when they want to be noticed.
In the kitchen, poultry shows up nearly everywhere. Roast chicken, chicken soup, fried chicken, duck confit and a sliced turkey sandwich all start from the same broad family of birds. Eggs count too, and a single hen can turn breakfast into a daily habit for a household that keeps a few in the backyard.
People mark the day in both directions. Some cook a favorite bird dish or try a new one, like roast duck or a quail egg. Others visit a farm, a county fair poultry barn or a neighbor's coop to see the birds up close, where the difference between a fluffy Silkie and a sleek Leghorn is easy to spot.
A flock settling onto its roost at dusk makes a soft, murmuring sound that anyone who has stood near a coop tends to remember.
