A little reason to celebrate

Bad Poetry Day

Fun ยท August 18

Bad Poetry Day invites people to write clumsy, overwrought or gloriously awkward verse on purpose, and to share it with a grin.

Bad Poetry Day

Bad Poetry Day falls on Wednesday, August 18, 2027. That is 295 days away.

Bad poetry is verse that tries very hard and misses. The rhymes are forced, the metaphors wobble, and the feelings arrive at full volume. On this day people write it on purpose, which turns out to be harder and more freeing than it sounds.

The pleasure comes from letting go of getting it right. Anyone who has stared at a blank page knows the pressure of wanting every line to land. Aim low and the words start to flow. A poem about a sandwich can rhyme "rye" with "goodbye" and "why oh why." An ode to a stapler can run eleven stanzas. Nobody minds.

Most people mark it in small ways. Friends trade limericks in a group chat. Coworkers leave a terrible couplet on the break room fridge. Families take turns at the dinner table adding one line each, and the poem gets worse with every round. Teachers sometimes use it as a warmup, since a deliberately awful poem teaches rhythm and rhyme as well as a good one does.

There is a craft to it. The best bad poems commit fully: grand language for tiny subjects, a rhyme scheme followed past the point of sense, an ending that rhymes a word with itself. Reading a bad line aloud with total seriousness is part of the art.

The classic test is the final couplet. If it makes someone groan and then ask to hear it again, it worked.
