A little reason to celebrate

Serendipity Day

Fun ยท August 18

Serendipity Day is about happy accidents: the lucky finds and chance meetings that turn up while you were looking for something else.

Serendipity Day

Serendipity Day falls on Wednesday, August 18, 2027. That is 295 days away.

Serendipity is the knack of finding something good without looking for it. You go to the library for one book and leave with the one shelved beside it. You take a wrong turn and find a bakery you now visit every week.

The word has a story of its own. It was coined by the English writer Horace Walpole, who took it from an old tale about three princes of Serendip. The princes kept making discoveries they had not set out to make. Serendip is an old name for Sri Lanka.

The day itself asks for very little planning, which suits the subject. Planning too hard would rather defeat the purpose. People mark it by leaving a little room for chance. That might mean walking a street they usually skip, talking to the person next to them in line, or opening a cookbook to a random page and making whatever is there.

It is also a nice prompt to remember past luck. Most people can name at least one lucky accident that shaped things, like a friend met by chance, a job found through a stray conversation, or a favorite song heard drifting out of a shop. Telling those stories out loud tends to bring up more of them.

The trick, if there is one, is attention. Lucky finds are everywhere, but they only count once someone stops long enough to notice them.
