National Ballpoint Pen Day falls on Thursday, June 10, 2027. That is 226 days away.
Somewhere in a kitchen drawer there is a ballpoint pen that has outlived three phones. It is probably the most ordinary object in the house, and also one of the cleverest.
The idea is simple. A small metal ball sits in a socket at the tip. As it rolls across paper, it picks up thick, oily ink from the reservoir behind it and leaves a line. The ink dries fast, which is why a ballpoint rarely smudges the way a fountain pen can. The ball also acts as a cap of sorts, keeping the ink from drying out inside the tube.
Most people never think about any of this until a pen skips. Ballpoints can be stubborn on glossy paper or when held upside down for long, because the ink relies on gravity to reach the ball. A few quick circles on scrap paper usually wake one up.
The ballpoint has also become an art tool. Some artists build up whole portraits in layers of blue or black ink, using light pressure for shadows and firmer strokes for dark lines. Others just doodle in the margins of meeting notes, which counts too.
Marking the day needs very little. Write something by hand, sort the drawer of pens that may or may not work, or try a sketch with nothing but a ballpoint and patience. The pens that pass the scribble test can go back in the drawer, ready to vanish into someone's pocket.
