A little reason to celebrate

Be a Kid Again Day

Fun ยท July 8

A day for doing the things you loved as a child, from playground swings and cartoons to cereal for dinner and a lazy afternoon of make believe.

Be a Kid Again Day

Be a Kid Again Day falls on Thursday, July 8, 2027. That is 254 days away.

Somewhere along the way, most adults stop climbing trees. Be a Kid Again Day asks you to remember why you liked it, and maybe to find a low branch and try.

The idea is simple. Spend part of the day doing something the younger you would have chosen. That might mean a box of crayons, a blanket fort, a backyard game of tag, or a bowl of the sugary cereal you were never allowed on school mornings. Nobody hands out rules, which is a very childlike arrangement in itself.

People mark it in small ways. Some dig out an old board game and discover the instructions are missing. Others swing at a local park, ride a bike with no destination, or watch a cartoon they once knew every word of. Families often turn it around and let the kids plan the day, which tends to involve more snacks than an adult would schedule.

The pleasure is mostly in the switch of attitude. Children play because play is interesting, not because it improves anything. A puddle is for jumping. A cardboard box is a spaceship until dinner. Giving yourself an hour of that kind of thinking can feel strange at first and then surprisingly easy.

Sidewalk chalk still works the same way it always did. It washes off in the rain, and the drawings are usually better than you expect.
