A little reason to celebrate

National Freezer Pop Day

Food · Fun · July 8

A day for freezer pops, the long plastic tubes of frozen flavored syrup that are snipped open and eaten on hot afternoons.

National Freezer Pop Day

National Freezer Pop Day falls on Thursday, July 8, 2027. That is 254 days away.

Freezer pops are long, thin plastic tubes filled with sweet, colored liquid that you freeze solid. You snip or tear off the top and push the ice up from the bottom as you go. They come in boxes of many tubes, usually in a mix of bright colors that stand in for flavors like cherry, grape, orange and blue raspberry.

They are sold unfrozen, which makes them easy to stash in a pantry until the freezer has room. A few hours later they turn into something closer to slush on a stick, minus the stick. The first bite is hard and icy. The last inch is mostly sweet juice, and most people tip the tube back and drink it.

The best setting is outdoors: a porch step, a backyard, the edge of a pool, anywhere sticky fingers do no harm. Kids trade colors with the seriousness of diplomats, and adults tend to remember exactly which flavor they always wanted and never got.

The practical trick is the opening. Scissors give a clean cut, while teeth give a jagged edge that scrapes. Squeezing too hard from the bottom sends the top piece flying. A cold tube is also easier to hold wrapped in a napkin, since the plastic gets icy on the hands.

At the bottom of the box, the blue ones are often gone first, and the leftover color says a lot about a household.
