A little reason to celebrate

Boone Day

History ยท June 7

Boone Day remembers Daniel Boone, the frontiersman known for exploring Kentucky and the trails that led settlers west over the Appalachians.

Boone Day

Boone Day falls on Monday, June 7, 2027. That is 223 days away.

Daniel Boone was an American frontiersman, a hunter and surveyor whose name became shorthand for the early push west across the Appalachian Mountains. Boone Day, also called Daniel Boone Day, is a turn toward his story and the country he walked through.

He is most closely tied to Kentucky. Boone helped blaze the Wilderness Road, a route through the Cumberland Gap that many settlers followed into the region, and he helped establish the settlement of Boonesborough. Much of his life was spent on foot in the woods, reading land, tracking game and finding passable ground where others saw only ridges.

The real man and the legend have drifted apart over time. Popular images often put him in a coonskin cap, though accounts suggest he preferred a broad felt hat. Stories made him larger than life, while the record shows a capable, restless person who also lost land, faced debts and moved often, ending his days in Missouri.

People mark the day in quiet, outdoor ways. Some walk a trail, especially one with frontier history. Others visit a local historical site, read a biography, or look at old maps to see how routes through the mountains followed rivers and gaps.

The Cumberland Gap is still there, a notch in the ridge where Kentucky, Virginia and Tennessee meet, and you can walk through it today.
