A little reason to celebrate

National VCR Day

Hobby ยท June 7

A look at the VCR, the home machine that recorded TV onto videotape and played rented movies, plus easy ways to revisit one.

National VCR Day

National VCR Day falls on Monday, June 7, 2027. That is 223 days away.

The VCR, or videocassette recorder, was the box under the television that played and recorded tapes. You pushed a cassette into the slot, heard the machine pull it in with a soft clunk, and waited for the picture to appear.

It did two jobs that felt new at the time. It let people record a broadcast and watch it later, and it let families watch movies at home on their own schedule. Most home machines used the VHS format, and the tapes held magnetic ribbon wound between two reels.

Using one had its rituals. There was the tracking control, nudged until the fuzzy lines at the top of the screen calmed down. There was the clock on the front, which in many homes blinked the same flashing numbers for years because setting it took more patience than anyone had. And there was rewinding, since a tape stopped wherever you left it.

People revisit the VCR now by digging out old home videos, swapping memories of favorite tapes, or simply looking at the machine as a piece of design, all buttons and chunky labels. Some old tapes are fragile, so it helps to play them on a machine in good shape, because a dirty or worn player can chew the ribbon.

If you find an old VHS tape in a closet, lift the flap on its front edge. Inside are the two reels and the dark, shiny ribbon stretched between them, which is where every recorded show and birthday party actually lived.
