A little reason to celebrate

National Cat Day

Animal ยท October 29

A day for house cats and the people who live with them, from napping habits and purring to adopting a cat from a local shelter.

National Cat Day

National Cat Day falls on Thursday, October 29, 2026. That is 2 days away.

Cats share millions of American homes, and most of them seem to regard the arrangement as their idea. This day is simply for them: the house cats on windowsills, the barn cats, the shelter cats waiting for someone to come by.

Part of the appeal is how particular cats are. They sleep for much of the day, often in a patch of sun that moves and takes the cat with it. They purr when content, knead soft blankets with their front paws, and groom themselves with rough tongues. Their whiskers help them judge tight spaces, and their eyes are built for low light, which explains a lot about the hallway at three in the morning.

People mark the day quietly, mostly. Some give their cat a new toy or a cardboard box, which is often the bigger hit. Others share photos, or spend an extra half hour on the couch letting a cat settle in. Many visit or support an animal shelter, where cats of every age and temperament are looking for homes.

Cats tend to prefer play that imitates hunting. A feather wand or a string pulled slowly along the floor, out of sight and back again, will usually hold a cat's attention longer than a toy that just sits there. Short sessions suit them best, and they like the game to end with something they can catch.
