A little reason to celebrate

National Internet Day

History · Fun · October 29

A look at the internet itself: the global network of connected computers behind email, websites, maps and the messages we send every day.

National Internet Day

National Internet Day falls on Thursday, October 29, 2026. That is 2 days away.

The internet is a network of networks. Millions of computers, phones and servers pass information to one another using shared rules called protocols, so a message from one device can find its way to another almost anywhere.

It is easy to confuse the internet with the web, but they are different things. The web is the collection of linked pages you open in a browser. The internet is the larger system underneath, which also carries email, video calls, online games and the quiet updates your phone downloads overnight.

Most of the time it feels invisible. You type an address, and a page appears. Behind that moment, data is broken into small packets, sent along whatever routes are available, and put back together at the other end. Cables under the ocean carry a great deal of that traffic, which is a pleasing thing to picture the next time a video loads.

People mark the day in small, practical ways. Some tidy up old accounts or finally change a weak password. Others call the relative who taught them to send their first email, or show someone younger what a dial-up tone sounded like. A few go the other direction and spend an hour offline, which gives the network a moment to miss them.

If you want a simple project, look up how your own home connection reaches the outside world. Somewhere between your router and the nearest data center, there is a box on a pole or a cabinet by the road doing a lot of patient work.
