A little reason to celebrate
National Chocolate Candy Day
Food ยท December 28
A day for chocolate candy in all its forms, from wrapped bars and truffles to nut clusters, chocolate-covered caramels and boxed assortments.
National Chocolate Candy Day falls on Monday, December 28, 2026. That is 62 days away.
Chocolate candy is any sweet where chocolate does the main work. That covers solid bars, filled bonbons, truffles, peanut clusters, chocolate-coated nougat and the foil-wrapped pieces that turn up in desk drawers.
Most of it starts with cacao beans, which are fermented, dried, roasted and ground into a paste. Add sugar and cocoa butter and you have dark chocolate. Add milk solids and it becomes milk chocolate. White chocolate skips the cocoa solids entirely and keeps the cocoa butter, which is why it tastes so mild and creamy.
The fun is in the variety. A good chocolate snaps cleanly and melts slowly on the tongue, because cocoa butter softens close to body temperature. Fillings change everything: a cherry cordial, a maple cream and a crisp toffee center can share one box and still feel like three different treats. Plenty of people have a firm opinion about which pieces in an assortment are worth claiming and which get left for someone else.
Marking the day usually means eating some, ideally with a little attention. Tasting two or three kinds side by side shows how much the cacao percentage and the milk change the flavor. Local candy shops often make their own clusters and barks, and a homemade batch needs little more than melted chocolate and whatever nuts or dried fruit are in the pantry.
Chocolate keeps best somewhere cool and dry, away from the fridge. Cold, damp air can leave a pale, dusty bloom on the surface, which looks odd but is still perfectly fine to eat.
Ways to celebrate
- Try a dark, milk and white chocolate side by side and compare.
- Make chocolate bark with melted chocolate and pantry nuts or dried fruit.
- Look for a local candy shop that makes its own chocolates.
- Share a small box of assorted chocolates with coworkers or neighbors.
