National Short Film Day turns attention to short films, the compact stories filmmakers tell in minutes instead of hours, and how to find and watch them.

National Short Film Day falls on Monday, December 28, 2026. That is 62 days away.
A short film tells a whole story in the time it takes to drink a cup of coffee. Some run a couple of minutes, others stretch closer to half an hour, but all of them have to set up a world, make you care and get out before the credits would normally start.
That tight frame shapes everything. There is little room for slow introductions, so a single look or a line of dialogue often carries what a feature would spend a scene on. Shorts come in every form: animation, documentary, comedy, drama, experimental pieces with no words at all. Many filmmakers make shorts early in their careers because they are cheaper to produce and easier to finish, and plenty keep making them because they like the form.
Watching shorts feels different from settling in for a movie. You can see three or four in an evening and end up with three or four distinct moods. Film festivals often group them into programs, libraries and streaming sites keep collections, and many filmmakers post their work online for free.
Shorts also make good conversation starters. Because they are brief, a friend is more likely to say yes to watching one with you, and you can talk about it right after while the ending is still fresh.
And if you have a phone with a camera, you already own the basic equipment to make one.
