A little reason to celebrate

National Coloring Book Day

Hobby · Fun · August 2

A day for coloring books and the quiet pleasure of filling printed outlines with crayons, colored pencils or markers.

National Coloring Book Day

National Coloring Book Day falls on Monday, August 2, 2027. That is 279 days away.

A coloring book is a stack of line drawings waiting for someone to finish them. The outlines are already there, so the only decisions left are which color goes where and whether to stay inside the lines.

That simplicity is most of the appeal. Children use coloring books to practice holding a crayon and to learn the names of colors. Adults tend to pick books with denser designs, like flowers, tiled patterns, city maps or animals made of tiny shapes, and work through a page slowly over an evening. Neither group needs any special skill. The book has already done the drawing.

The tools change the result more than people expect. Crayons give soft, waxy color that builds up with pressure. Colored pencils can be layered and blended for shading. Markers are bold and fast but can bleed through thin paper, which is why some books print on one side of each sheet only.

Marking the day can be as plain as opening an old book and finishing a page someone started years ago. Families sometimes color the same picture side by side and compare. Friends trade pages, or one person picks the palette and the other has to use it. Libraries and community centers often keep free printable sheets on hand.

A finished page has a way of ending up on the refrigerator, held in place by a magnet, long after the crayons are back in the box.
