A little reason to celebrate

National Cooler Day

Fun · Seasonal · The Friday before the last Monday in May

National Cooler Day is about the humble insulated box that keeps drinks cold and sandwiches crisp at picnics, beaches and backyard cookouts.

National Cooler Day

National Cooler Day falls on Friday, May 28, 2027. That is 213 days away.

A cooler is an insulated box with a lid, built to keep cold things cold for a while. Most have walls filled with foam, and that trapped layer slows heat from getting in. Add ice or frozen packs and you have a portable refrigerator that runs on nothing but planning.

The day falls on the Friday before the last Monday in May, which lines it up neatly with the start of the outdoor season. Plenty of coolers spend the winter in a garage corner, and this is roughly when they get dragged out, wiped down and checked for whatever was left in them last fall.

Coolers come in many shapes. There are hard-sided chests with wheels, soft bags with shoulder straps, and small lunch-sized boxes that hold one meal and a drink. Some people pack theirs with a system: ice on the bottom, drinks next, delicate food on top. Others prefer the method of opening the lid and dropping things in until it closes.

Packing does make a difference. A cooler that starts cold and stays full holds its chill longer, since there is less warm air inside. Keeping it in the shade and opening it less often helps too. Block ice tends to last longer than cubes, while cubes cool drinks faster.

The best part of a cooler is often the moment late in the afternoon when someone reaches past the melting ice and finds one last cold can.
