A little reason to celebrate

National Create a Vacuum Day

Fun · History · February 4

A look at the vacuum, the space with almost nothing in it, and the simple ways people create and explore one at home or in a classroom.

National Create a Vacuum Day

National Create a Vacuum Day falls on Thursday, February 4, 2027. That is 100 days away.

A vacuum is a space with very little matter in it, not even much air. On this day the word means the physics, not the household appliance (though the appliance borrowed its name from the idea).

No container on Earth holds a perfect vacuum. What people make is a partial one, where enough air has been pulled out that the pressure inside drops well below the air around it. That difference is what makes a vacuum interesting. The outside air pushes in, and things get squeezed, sealed or lifted.

You meet partial vacuums more often than you might think. A drinking straw works because your mouth lowers the pressure inside it, and the surrounding air pushes the liquid up. Vacuum-sealed coffee bags go hard as bricks for the same reason. A suction cup sticks to a window because there is less air behind it than in front.

Sound also behaves differently. It needs something to travel through, like air or water, so it cannot cross a true vacuum. Space is close to a vacuum, which is why it is quiet out there, whatever the movies suggest.

The easiest home experiment needs only a plastic syringe with the tip covered by a fingertip. Pull the plunger back and feel it tug against you, then let go and watch it slide home. A few marshmallows inside a capped syringe will puff up when you pull, then shrink back when you release.
