A day for soup made in your own kitchen, from simple broths and vegetable pots to hearty stews built from whatever is in the fridge.

National Homemade Soup Day falls on Thursday, February 4, 2027. That is 100 days away.
Homemade soup starts with a pot, some liquid and whatever needs using up. Onions soften in a little oil, a few vegetables follow, then water or stock, and time does most of the rest.
It is one of the most forgiving things a person can cook. Measurements are loose, substitutions are expected, and a soup that tastes flat usually just needs salt or a squeeze of lemon. Many families have a version nobody wrote down: a chicken noodle, a lentil, a tomato soup that only one relative makes correctly.
Soup also stretches. A handful of beans, a leftover roast or the last of the carrots can become several bowls, and many soups taste better the next day once the flavors settle. Most freeze well, so one afternoon of chopping can turn into lunches for weeks.
People mark the day by making a pot, trading recipes, or bringing a jar to a neighbor. Bread on the side is traditional. So is arguing about whether crackers belong in the bowl or next to it.
The broth is where much of the character comes from. Simmering bones, vegetable scraps or a parmesan rind for an hour gives a richer base than plain water, and it uses things that would otherwise be thrown away.
