A day for the waltz, the turning ballroom dance in three-quarter time, and for trying a few simple box steps at home or on a dance floor.

National Dance the Waltz Day falls on Thursday, March 4, 2027. That is 128 days away.
The waltz is a partner dance built on a count of three. One, two, three, one, two, three. Couples hold each other in a closed frame and travel around the floor while turning, so the room seems to rotate slowly around them.
That steady triple rhythm is what makes a waltz recognizable within a bar or two. The first beat usually gets a little more weight, and dancers often rise and fall with it, stepping down on one and lifting through two and three. Done well, it looks effortless. Done for the first time in a kitchen, it looks like two people negotiating a very small roundabout.
Beginners usually start with the box step, which traces a square on the floor in six steps. Once that feels natural, partners add gentle turns. There are faster and slower styles, and the slow version common in ballroom classes is a forgiving place to begin because it gives you time to think about your feet.
You do not need a ballroom. A clear patch of floor, a piece of music in three-quarter time and comfortable shoes will do. Many community centers and dance studios offer drop-in lessons, and plenty of video tutorials break the box step down slowly. Music helps more than people expect. Once you can hear the one, the rest of the count tends to follow.
