A little reason to celebrate

Hug a G.I. Day

Commemorative ยท March 4

Hug a G.I. Day invites Americans to thank the soldiers and service members in their lives, often with a simple hug or a kind word.

Hug a G.I. Day

Hug a G.I. Day falls on Thursday, March 4, 2027. That is 128 days away.

G.I. is the old nickname for an American soldier, and it has stretched over the years to cover service members in general. The name of this day asks for something direct: find one and give them a hug.

The letters are usually read as "government issue," a label once stamped on military supplies. Soldiers picked it up and applied it to themselves, partly with pride and partly with the weary humor of people who are issued everything, including their haircut. The word stuck in letters, newspapers and family stories, and many veterans still use it comfortably.

Most people mark the day close to home. A grandparent who served, a neighbor in the reserves, a cousin stationed far away. A hug works when you can be in the same room. When you cannot, a phone call or a handwritten note carries the same message. Some people visit a veterans' home or a local post of a veterans' group to spend an hour talking and listening.

A hug should always be welcome, so asking first is kind, especially with someone you do not know well. Plenty of service members would rather have a handshake, a cup of coffee or a few minutes of real conversation about where they served.

Families of service members count here too. Spouses, parents and children handle long absences and frequent moves, and they rarely hear thanks for it.
