A little reason to celebrate

National Dice Day

Hobby · Fun · December 4

A day for dice: the small numbered cubes behind board games, tabletop adventures and family game nights, and the simple pleasure of a good roll.

National Dice Day

National Dice Day falls on Friday, December 4, 2026. That is 38 days away.

Dice are among the oldest gaming tools people use. The familiar one is a six-sided cube with pips from one to six, and on a standard die the opposite faces add up to seven. Roll it, and chance decides what happens next.

That simple job turns up everywhere. Dice move pieces around board games, settle who goes first, and drive the luck in classic games like Yahtzee. Tabletop role-playing players keep whole sets in a pouch, including the twenty-sided die that tends to decide whether a hero succeeds or trips over a doorframe.

Dice come in more shapes than the cube. Four, eight, ten, twelve and twenty sides are common, each one a regular solid so every face has a fair chance of landing up. Materials range from plastic and wood to metal and stone, and some people collect them the way others collect stamps.

The easiest way to mark the day is to roll some. Pull out a game that has been sitting in the closet, teach someone a dice game that needs nothing but a few cubes and a scrap of paper, or just sort through the stray dice that collect in junk drawers. Rolling on a soft surface, like a felt mat or a towel, keeps the noise down and the dice from skittering under the couch.

A single die is a tiny thing, but it can make a quiet evening at the kitchen table feel like an event.
