A little reason to celebrate

National Sock Day

Fun ยท December 4

A day for socks: the knit tubes that cushion feet, keep toes warm, and somehow vanish one at a time from the laundry.

National Sock Day

National Sock Day falls on Friday, December 4, 2026. That is 38 days away.

Socks are soft coverings for the feet, usually knit from cotton, wool or synthetic yarn. They sit between skin and shoe, where they cushion each step, soak up moisture and keep toes warm.

Most people own more pairs than they could count without opening the drawer. There are thin dress socks, thick hiking socks, ankle socks that hide inside sneakers, and tall ones that climb to the knee. Wool socks stay warm even when damp, which is why they turn up on cold trails and in winter boots. Patterned socks have become a quiet way to show personality, a flash of stripes or tiny tacos under a serious pair of trousers.

Then there is the lone sock. Every household seems to have a small pile of them, each waiting for a partner that went into the wash and never came back. Nobody has fully explained this.

Marking the day is easy and mostly happens at home. People sort the drawer, match what can be matched, and retire pairs with holes worn through at the heel. Some wear their brightest pair on purpose. Others knit, or finally darn the favorite pair they could not bring themselves to throw out.

Old socks rarely need to go to waste. They make good dust cloths, padding for fragile things in a move, and the classic starting point for a sock puppet with two button eyes.
