A little reason to celebrate
Food ยท The first Friday in June
A food day for donuts (or doughnuts), the fried rings and filled rounds of dough that turn up at bakeries, offices and coffee counters across the US.

National Donut Day falls on Friday, June 4, 2027. That is 220 days away.
A donut is a piece of sweet dough, fried until golden and then glazed, sugared, frosted or filled. The ring shape is the famous one, but the round filled kind, the twisted cruller and the small hole saved from the middle all count. The day falls on the first Friday in June, and it goes by either spelling.
There are two main families. Yeast donuts are light and airy, with a soft pull when you tear one open. Cake donuts use a batter leavened with baking powder, so they come out denser and crumbly, which makes them good at holding a dunk in coffee. Old-fashioned donuts are a cake style with cracked, craggy edges that catch extra glaze.
Most people mark the day the simple way, by buying a box and sharing it. A dozen set on a break room table tends to disappear faster than any meeting agenda. Others use it as a reason to visit the local shop they keep driving past, or to try a flavor they usually skip, like maple, jelly or plain sugar.
The hole in the middle has a practical side. Without it, the center of a thick round of dough can stay raw while the outside browns. The hole lets hot oil reach more of the surface, so the whole thing cooks evenly, and the leftover rounds of dough become donut holes.
