A little reason to celebrate

National Hug Your Cat Day

Animal ยท June 4

A day for showing affection to the cats you live with, on their terms, with a gentle hug, a slow blink or a quiet lap session.

National Hug Your Cat Day

National Hug Your Cat Day falls on Friday, June 4, 2027. That is 220 days away.

The idea is simple: give your cat a hug. The day also goes by International Hug Your Cat Day, and in either form it is about affection between people and the cats who share their homes.

The catch is that cats have opinions. Plenty of them love being scooped up and held close. Others prefer a hand resting on their back, or a spot beside you on the couch with an inch of respectful space. A cat that leans in, purrs, or presses its head against your chin is saying yes. A cat that stiffens, flicks its tail or wriggles away has answered too, and the polite move is to let go.

So a good hug often looks less like a squeeze and more like an invitation. Sit down, let the cat come to you, and support its back legs if you lift it. Many cats show affection in their own ways, by kneading a blanket, following you from room to room, or giving a slow blink from across the room. You can blink slowly back. It is one of the few conversations with a cat where you are not the one being ignored.

People mark the day with extra lap time, a new toy, a long brushing session, or a photo of the cat looking mildly put upon. Shelters sometimes use the occasion to introduce visitors to cats who would like a home and a regular lap.

For a cat that does not care for hugs, a warm patch of sun on the floor and your company nearby will usually do.
