A little reason to celebrate

National Fragrance Day

Fun ยท March 21

A day about fragrance: perfumes, colognes and the everyday scents that shape memory, mood and the way a room or a person seems.

National Fragrance Day

National Fragrance Day falls on Sunday, March 21, 2027. That is 145 days away.

Fragrance is the art of making something smell a certain way on purpose. Perfume, cologne, scented candles and the faint note of soap on a clean shirt all count. The day is a nudge to pay attention to a sense most of us use constantly and rarely think about.

A perfume is usually built in layers. Top notes are the bright first impression, often citrus or herbs, and they fade quickly. Heart notes, frequently floral, arrive next. Base notes such as vanilla, musk or woods linger longest, which is why a scent on your wrist smells different after an hour than it did in the bottle.

Smell has a strong pull on memory. A whiff of sunscreen, cedar or a grandparent's hand lotion can bring back a whole afternoon before you have decided to remember it. Plenty of people mark the day by revisiting a scent like that, or by wearing the bottle that has been sitting on the dresser saving itself for an occasion.

Trying a fragrance properly takes patience. Spray it on skin rather than paper, wait a while, and smell it again later. Perfume counters often keep coffee beans nearby to reset the nose between samples, though walking outside for a minute works too.

The nose also gets tired of whatever it smells most, so the scent you wear every day is usually more noticeable to everyone around you than to you.
