A little reason to celebrate

National Graham Cracker Day

Food ยท July 5

A day for the graham cracker, the lightly sweet, honey-and-whole-wheat cracker behind s'mores, pie crusts and countless after-school snacks.

National Graham Cracker Day

National Graham Cracker Day falls on Monday, July 5, 2027. That is 251 days away.

A graham cracker is a thin, crisp rectangle made with whole wheat flour, usually sweetened with honey or brown sugar and sometimes dusted with cinnamon. It sits somewhere between a cookie and a cracker, and it has never seemed bothered about which.

Most sheets come scored into smaller squares, so you can snap one in half along the perforation. The break is rarely clean. Anyone who has tried to make a perfect square for a s'more knows the edge tends to wander.

That s'more is probably the cracker's best known job: toasted marshmallow and a piece of chocolate pressed between two halves. A close second is the crumb crust. Crushed grahams mixed with melted butter and a little sugar press into a pan and bake into the base for cheesecake, key lime pie and plenty of icebox desserts. The crumbs also turn up layered in parfaits and in no-bake treats.

Plain, the flavor is mild and toasty, with a faint malty sweetness from the wheat. They soften quickly when dunked in milk, so dunking is a matter of timing. A box that has been left open goes soft too. Fold the sleeve over tightly and clip it, and the crackers stay crisp much longer.

For something quick, spread a square with peanut butter and top it with banana slices. Or keep it simple and eat one straight from the sleeve, the way most people first met them.
