A little reason to celebrate

Houseplant Appreciation Day

Nature · Hobby · January 10

A day for the plants that live indoors with us: pothos, snake plants and ferns, and the small routines of watering, light and care that keep them going.

Houseplant Appreciation Day

Houseplant Appreciation Day falls on Sunday, January 10, 2027. That is 75 days away.

A pothos trailing off a bookshelf. A snake plant standing in the corner it has occupied for years. Houseplants are the quiet roommates of many homes, and this day gives them some attention.

Most houseplants are tropical or subtropical species that happen to tolerate indoor life. Many of the popular ones, like pothos and philodendrons, grow naturally under the canopy of larger trees, which is why they cope with the filtered light near a window. Succulents and cacti come from drier places and prefer bright light and soil that dries out between waterings.

Caring for them is mostly a matter of paying attention. Leaves that droop, yellow or reach toward the glass are telling you something about water or light. Overwatering is a common problem, so many growers check the soil with a finger before reaching for the watering can. A pot with a drainage hole helps a great deal.

Appreciation can be practical. Wiping dust off broad leaves lets them take in more light. Turning a pot a quarter turn keeps a plant from leaning in one direction. Repotting a crowded plant into a slightly larger container gives its roots room.

Plenty of people also share their plants. Pothos, spider plants and tradescantia root easily from cuttings set in a glass of water, and a jar of new roots on a windowsill makes a good gift for a neighbor. Spider plants even produce their own small plantlets that dangle from the parent on long stems.
