A day for eagles, especially the bald and golden eagles of the United States, and for learning how these big raptors live and how people watch them.

National Save the Eagles Day falls on Sunday, January 10, 2027. That is 75 days away.
Eagles are large birds of prey with hooked beaks, strong talons and eyesight sharp enough to spot a meal from far above. In the United States the two best known are the bald eagle and the golden eagle, and this day points attention toward both of them and the places they need to live.
The bald eagle is not actually bald. Adults have white feathers on the head and tail, which from a distance reads as a bare scalp. Young birds are mottled brown and take several years to get that look. Bald eagles tend to stay near water and eat a lot of fish, while golden eagles favor open country and mountains in the West, where they hunt rabbits and ground squirrels.
Pairs build huge nests of sticks, often high in tall trees or on cliffs, and many return to the same nest year after year, adding to it each season. Some nests grow heavy enough to rival a small car in bulk.
Most people mark the day by watching. Lakes, rivers and reservoirs are good places to look, especially in colder months when eagles gather near open water. Wildlife refuges and nature centers often know where birds are roosting, and some run live nest cameras that let anyone follow a pair raising chicks.
The key courtesy is distance. Eagles can abandon a nest if people crowd it, so binoculars or a long camera lens do the work while feet stay well back on the trail.
