They are made from all sorts of things. Plastic is common now, but buttons also come in wood, metal, glass, shell, horn and bone. Some are plain and practical. Others are tiny sculptures, painted, carved or pressed with patterns, and that variety is what draws people to collect them.
Many households have a button tin somewhere, often inherited, full of strays saved from worn out clothes and the spare ones that come sewn inside new garments. Tipping it out on a table and sorting by color or size is oddly absorbing. Each button once belonged to something, and a few can usually be matched to a coat or dress someone remembers.
Crafters put buttons to work in collages, cards, jewelry and quilts. Sewers keep them for repairs. Children like them for counting and stringing. A loose button is also one of the easiest mending jobs there is, needing only a needle, some thread and a few minutes.
If a shirt has been sitting in a drawer waiting for a button, it is probably still there, with the spare tucked inside the side seam.
