National Moscato Day falls on Sunday, May 9, 2027. That is 194 days away.
Moscato is a wine made from Muscat grapes, one of the oldest and most aromatic grape families grown for wine. It is usually sweet, often low in alcohol, and frequently a little fizzy.
Pour a glass and the smell arrives before the taste. People describe it as peach, apricot, orange blossom or honey, and the grape is unusual in that the wine really does smell like grapes. The best known style comes from northwest Italy, where Moscato d'Asti is made gently sparkling, or frizzante, with bubbles softer than those in most sparkling wines. There are still versions too, along with pink ones and rich dessert wines made from the same grape family.
Moscato is served cold. It pairs easily with fruit, light cakes and soft cheeses, and its sweetness can calm spicy food. Many people drink it on its own in the afternoon, where its lower alcohol feels about right.
To mark the day, some people open a bottle with friends and compare styles side by side. Others make a simple fruit salad or a plate of cheese to go with it. If wine is not part of your day, Muscat grapes are sometimes sold fresh, and eating a few shows where those flowery notes come from.
A chilled bottle of Moscato d'Asti opened once the dishes are cleared, with a bowl of strawberries on the table, is how plenty of people end a meal.
