A day for telling jokes, from puns and riddles to knock-knock jokes, marked in the United States and in other countries as well.

International Joke Day falls on Thursday, July 1, 2027. That is 247 days away.
A joke is a short story with a trap door at the end. You walk along with the teller, expecting one thing, and then the floor drops into something else. That little drop is the laugh, and this day is given over to it. It is marked in the United States as well as in other places.
Jokes come in a lot of shapes. There are puns, which bend a word until it means two things at once. There are riddles, knock-knock jokes and the long shaggy dog story that wanders for minutes before landing on a groan. Some jokes live on cereal boxes and popsicle sticks. Others get passed around a family table for so long that everyone can say the punchline in unison.
Most people mark the day simply by telling one. Kids trade knock-knock jokes at school. Coworkers slip a pun into a morning message. Some families keep a running favorite that comes out every time they gather, and the day is a reason to dust it off.
Timing matters more than most people expect. A pause before the punchline gives the listener a moment to guess, and the surprise works better when the guess turns out wrong. Rushing the last line is how a good joke turns into a shrug.
The best ones tend to be kind, short and easy to repeat. A joke that a seven-year-old can retell at dinner, slightly wrong and still funny, has done its job.
