A day about kindergarten, the first year of school for many children, with its circle time, blocks, paint and early reading and counting.

National Kindergarten Day falls on Wednesday, April 21, 2027. That is 176 days away.
Kindergarten is the year many children first walk into a classroom of their own. It comes before first grade, and for a lot of families it marks the start of school life, with cubbies, name tags and a backpack that looks enormous on a small person.
The word is German and means children's garden. The idea behind it was that young children grow best through play, songs, stories and hands-on work, and plenty of kindergarten rooms still feel that way. There are blocks, crayons, a reading rug, and a calendar that gets updated together every morning.
A kindergarten day has its own rhythm. Circle time, a story, letters and numbers, snack, recess, maybe a nap or quiet time. Children learn to take turns, hang up a coat and raise a hand, which are skills adults are still working on.
People often mark the day by remembering their own kindergarten year. Some still recall a teacher's name, a classroom pet, or the smell of paste. Families with young children might read a school story together or look through drawings saved from a first year. Teachers may get a note from a parent, or from a former student who is now much taller.
If you kept a kindergarten drawing, it is probably a person with arms coming straight out of the head.
