A little reason to celebrate

Labor Day

Federal holiday ยท The first Monday in September

Labor Day honors American workers with a federal holiday on the first Monday in September, often spent at parades, picnics and backyard grills.

Labor Day

Labor Day falls on Monday, September 6, 2027. That is 314 days away.

Labor Day is a federal holiday that honors the people who do the work of the country. It falls on the first Monday in September, which gives many workers a three day weekend and a chance to rest from the jobs the day recognizes.

For a lot of Americans it also marks the informal end of summer. Public pools often close for the season around now, school calendars are starting up, and the last long weekend of warm weather tends to fill with cookouts, lake trips and crowded highways.

The day has a working history behind it. Labor unions have long held parades and gatherings on it, and some towns still do, with marching bands, union banners and local trades walking together down Main Street. Elsewhere the marking is quieter: a picnic table, a cooler, and a grill that someone has been tending since mid morning.

It is a good moment to think about the work that usually goes unseen. Many people still clock in on the holiday itself, including nurses, firefighters, grocery clerks, transit crews and the cooks behind every restaurant that stays open. A thank you to someone on shift lands well.

There is an old American custom of not wearing white after Labor Day. Few people follow it strictly anymore, but it still comes up every year, usually from someone wearing white.
