A little reason to celebrate

National Read a Book Day

Hobby ยท September 6

A day for picking up a book and reading it, whether a new title, an old favorite, or the one that has waited on the nightstand for months.

National Read a Book Day

National Read a Book Day falls on Monday, September 6, 2027. That is 314 days away.

The idea is simple. Pick up a book and read some of it. Any book counts: a thick novel, a slim collection of poems, a cookbook read like a story, a comic, a field guide to birds.

Reading asks for very little equipment. A book, some light, and a place to sit will do, and many people would add a cup of tea and a blanket to that list. It is also one of the few hobbies that works equally well on a crowded bus and in a quiet room.

People mark the day in different ways. Some finally open the book that has been sitting on the nightstand with a bookmark stuck on page twelve. Others reread something from childhood to see whether it holds up. Families read aloud after dinner, and friends trade recommendations or swap paperbacks they have finished.

The public library is the easy place to start if the shelves at home feel picked over. A library card is usually free, and librarians are glad to suggest something if you describe what you liked last time. Audiobooks and ebooks are often available to borrow too.

There is no target to hit. Ten pages read slowly can stay with you longer than a whole book rushed through, and a chapter on the porch before the light goes is a perfectly complete way to spend the evening.
