A day for thanking the police officers, sheriff's deputies, troopers and other law enforcement officers who serve communities across the United States.
National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day falls on Saturday, January 9, 2027. That is 74 days away.
Law enforcement covers a wide range of work. City police officers, county sheriff's deputies, state troopers, campus police, park rangers with police duties and federal agents all fall under the term. National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day, also known by its initials L.E.A.D., sets aside time to thank them.
Much of the job happens out of sight. Officers work nights, weekends and holidays, because calls do not stop at five o'clock. A shift might include directing traffic around a broken signal, writing reports, answering a welfare check on an elderly neighbor and sitting through a long stretch where nothing happens at all. Dispatchers and support staff keep the whole system running from behind a desk and a headset.
The day is usually marked in simple, personal ways. Some people wear blue clothing or leave a porch light on with a blue bulb. Schools and community groups send cards to their local station. Neighbors drop off a note, and some departments share stories from residents who wanted to say thanks for a specific moment of help.
A thank-you note tends to mean the most when it names something particular, like the officer who helped after a fender bender or the deputy who visits the school crosswalk each morning. Many stations keep cards like that pinned to a bulletin board in the break room, where the next shift can read them.
