A little reason to celebrate

National Static Electricity Day

Fun ยท January 9

A look at static electricity: the small sparks, crackles and shocks that come from electric charge building up and jumping to find balance.

National Static Electricity Day

National Static Electricity Day falls on Saturday, January 9, 2027. That is 74 days away.

Static electricity is electric charge that builds up on a surface and stays put instead of flowing through a wire. It waits there until it finds a path, then leaves all at once, often as a tiny snap you can feel in a fingertip.

The charge comes from contact. When two materials touch and pull apart, electrons can move from one to the other. One side ends up with extra negative charge, the other with a shortage. Shuffle across a carpet in socks and you can collect enough to make a doorknob bite back.

That bite is a spark, and in a dark room you can sometimes see it as a faint blue flicker. The crackle you hear when pulling off a wool sweater is the same thing happening many times over. Lightning works on a related idea, only at a scale no sweater could match.

Most people meet static as a minor ambush, but it can be fun to explore on purpose. A plastic comb run through dry hair will lift small bits of paper off a table. Two charged objects with the same kind of charge push each other away, which is why hair sometimes stands up and fans out.

If the shocks are getting old, touching a metal key to the doorknob first lets the spark jump to the key instead of your finger. It still happens. You just stop feeling it.
