A little reason to celebrate

Marine Mammal Rescue Day

Animal ยท April 27

Marine Mammal Rescue Day turns attention to the seals, sea lions, dolphins and whales that get stranded or hurt, and the people who help them recover.

Marine Mammal Rescue Day

Marine Mammal Rescue Day falls on Tuesday, April 27, 2027. That is 182 days away.

A young seal hauled out on a crowded beach, a sea lion tangled in old fishing line, a dolphin stranded in shallow water. Marine mammal rescue is the work of finding animals like these, getting them care, and returning them to the sea when they are ready.

Marine mammals breathe air, are warm-blooded and nurse their young, even though they spend most or all of their lives in water. Seals, sea lions, whales, dolphins, porpoises, manatees and sea otters all belong to the group. When one ends up on shore, it is not always in trouble. Seal pups are often left alone on beaches while their mothers feed offshore, and a well-meaning person who picks one up can do real harm.

That is why rescue is mostly a job for trained teams. Responders assess the animal, keep onlookers back, and decide whether it needs to come in for care. At rehabilitation centers, staff and volunteers feed patients, treat wounds and track their progress. Some patients need a few days. Others stay for months.

For most people, marking the day means learning what to do on the beach. Keep a good distance, keep dogs leashed, and call a local stranding hotline instead of stepping in. Many coastal rescue centers post that number online and share stories of animals they have released.

In the United States, federal law protects marine mammals, so touching, feeding or moving one is generally not allowed for the public.
