National Mason Jar Day is about the glass canning jar with a screw-top lid, used for preserves, pantry storage, drinks and crafts.

National Mason Jar Day falls on Monday, November 30, 2026. That is 34 days away.
The mason jar is a thick glass jar with a threaded mouth, built for home canning. Its lid usually comes in two parts, a flat disc with a rubber-like seal and a metal band that screws down to hold it in place.
That two-part lid is the clever bit. When jars of jam, pickles or tomatoes are heated and then cool, the seal pulls tight against the rim, and the flat lid often makes a soft pop as it settles. Anyone who has put up a batch of preserves knows that sound from across the kitchen.
The jar has long since wandered out of the canning pot. People keep dry beans, rice and oats in them, carry salads layered from dressing at the bottom to greens on top, and drink iced tea out of them. Clear glass helps here, since you can see at a glance how much flour is left. Crafters turn them into lanterns, vases, pencil cups and terrariums, and a row of them on an open shelf has become its own kind of kitchen decoration.
Jars come in a few standard sizes, and the mouths come in regular and wide. Wide mouths are easier to fill and clean. Regular mouths pour more neatly. Mixing them up is how a drawer fills with lids that fit nothing.
